"The 1840 listed only the name of head-of-household and then included a number for each male & female in various age groups, such as '1 male Under 5.' This data base includes a listing of last names; first names; estimated date of birth; other relevant data. If there were a total of 5 people in a household, the surname column will have 5 like last names. The first name column will include the name or initial given for the head-of-household and the other entries will say either female -5 (depending, of course) or the first name if I could find it in the 1850 census or some other book. The next column has an estimated birth year. If the person or family was found in the 1850 census, a more accurate date-of-birth is listed. If not, the year listed is the oldest per the 1840 census. The last column, of 'other relevant data' will list things such as an alternate spelling of the last name." (Dave Wallace)
